SENSOR Innovation Award 2008 – Nominees
AMA Association for Sensor Technology nominates three entries. On occasion of its Trade Exhibition SENSOR+TEST, May 6 – 8 in Nürnberg, Germany, AMA Fachverband für Sensorik e.V. (AMA Association for Sensor Technology) will award its 8th annual 10,000 € SENSOR Innovation Award. The jury has reached a decision and nominated three entries for its award.
“This year we experienced a slight decline in the number of applications. It seems as though our branch’s economical upturn has also affected R&D departments where it has gotten in the way of writing applications. We received numerous inquiries about the application deadline even after this date had already been reached, so that it is not a question of interest in the award or its reputation.” The quantitative turnout did not quite satisfy jury president, Professor Dr. Andreas Schütze, University of Saarbrücken. “However, quantity is not everything, and again the applications’ quality is excellent.”
Entries are judged by their height of innovation, the prize is not meant to award basic academic research. Rather, it is intended for practically useful applications. And finally, the rule states that this prize goes to the developers, e.g. the actual heads, and not to companies or institutes behind the development.
Of the 25 applications, nine come from outside Germany, and three works are of such outstanding quality that the jury nominated them:
Intelligent Multisensoric Writing System BiSP®
Fachhochschule Regensburg - Fakultät Elektro- und Informationstechnik (University of Applied Sciences Regensburg, Electronics and Information Technology Department)
Team spokesman: Prof. Dr. Jürgen Kempf
SensFloor® - Sensitive Floor Covering for “Ambient Assisted Living” Applications
Future-Shape GmbH + Ing.-Büro Rupert Glaser
Team spokeswoman: Christl Lauterbach, Future-Shape GmbH, Höhenkirchen-Siegertsbrunn
Spectrally Tuneable Infrared Detector with Micromechanical Fabry Perot Filter
InfraTec GmbH GB Sensorik + Technichal University Chemnitz - Centre for Microtechnologies + Fraunhofer IZM - Chemnitz, Dept. Multi Device Integration
Team spokesman: Dr. Norbert Neumann, InfraTec GmbH, Dresden
“In contrast to the past, this year we do not register a specific trend in the innovations. Rather, the three nominees reflect the broad innovative scope in sensor technology and its applications,” comments Professor Schütze, “which corresponds quite well with the breadth of sensor technology and its applications as represented by the SENSOR+TEST.”
In a second round, the jury will decide on this year’s winner or on possibly splitting the award among the group of three nominees. The award will be presented in Nürnberg on May 6, 2008, during the SENSOR+TEST.
