Subtle signs of economic recovery
The turnover in sensor and measuring technology in the second quarter of 2009 has dropped a further 5 percent compared to the first quarter. During the first quarter of this year, the industry’s turnover took an 11 percent dive and went down 9 percent in last quarter of 2008. Approximately 40 percent of the polled companies stated that they had implemented reduced working hours last quarter. That at least was the result of the quarterly polls held by the AMA Association for Sensor Technology on business trends in the sensor industry. Polled was about 12 percent of the German sensor industry.
“These figures do not represent the positive results of some growth segments, such as consumer electronics or the sensor area in micro-electrical engineering, video-games business, or mobile telephony. Nevertheless, although the industry turnover as a whole continues to drop, we are observing a significant reduction of the downward trend. If this is sustained the next quarter, it can be considered a trend reversal and we would have thus reached the trough,” says Dr. Thomas Simmons, the General Director of AMA Association for Sensor Technology.
Sensor technology is a key technology for all sectors of industry. That is why the economic trend of this branch of industry is such a suitable barometer for the entire industry and can be applied to the overall business trend with only few limitations. Dr. Simmons adds, “The incipient structural changes make a return to the old conditions improbable, but there are nevertheless grounds for hope of an early recuperation and an end of reduced working hours.”
