Time of Flight 3D Distance Sensor with Integrating Pulse Processing

Three-dimensional distance sensors based on Time of Flight (ToF) principles are gaining import in many areas; among these are: automotive applications, such as for in-cabin monitoring or pre crash detection, automation technology applications, such as for robot control, and consumer applications, such as for electronic game consoles. The main goal of current research is to lower costs and increase performance (increased accuracy, higher resolution, quicker response). The technology developed at IMS and its spin-off TriDiCam is based on standard CMOS technology and is therefore more economical than the competing mixed technology (CCD/CMOS). The system combines present approaches for phase and pulse measurement with an integrated evaluation of phase and intensity of the reflected signal.
