AMA Association reports industry development for the third quarter of 2020
While the sensor and measurement technology industry recorded significant losses until the middle of the year, the third quarter gives hope for a slow recovery. While sales declined significantly in the first and second quarters, sales development in the third quarter indicates a slight stabilization with plus one percent. Incoming orders increased by four percent, which gives the industry cause for optimism.
Berlin, December 11, 2020 - The AMA Association for Sensor and Measurement Technology e.V. (AMA) surveyed its approximately 450 members on economic development in the third quarter. According to its own data, the industry generated a sales increase of one percent in the third quarter, compared to the previous quarter.
This is a positive development, as the industry had expected a minus of three percent for the third quarter. Among the large companies, sales by suppliers to their own sensor and measurement technology industry sector developed disproportionately well. Sales of suppliers to the mechanical engineering sector stagnated, while those of automotive suppliers are slowly stabilizing.
Short-time working and disruption of supply chains
The proportion of companies that introduced or maintained short-time working in the third quarter was 58 percent. Here, suppliers to the automotive industry, 80 percent of which are on short-time work, are showing themselves to be particularly affected.
The AMA Association also asked its members about pandemic-related supply chain disruptions. Supply chains were disrupted for a quarter of members, and 42 percent of these members were unable to find adequate replacement suppliers. Again, AMA members supplying to the automotive industry were particularly affected.
Summary Statement:
"We are pleased to see a slight upward trend in the sensor and measurement industry in the third quarter," said Thomas Simmons, AMA executive director. "However, we see a light at the end of the tunnel for now. Due to the heavy losses in the first quarters, the industry lost the very good industry performance of the past two to three years. The effects of the COVID 19 pandemic are difficult to foresee. Nevertheless, our members are mostly optimistic about the fourth quarter and expect a six percent increase in sales."

Applications are open to individuals and development teams with innovative research and development solutions that demonstrate a recognizable market relevance. The renowned AMA Innovation Award is endowed with prize money of 10,000 euros. In addition, companies can apply for the special "Young Company" prize if they have been in the market for no longer than five years, employ fewer than 50 employees and generate annual sales of less than 10 million euros. The winner in this category will receive a free booth at SENSOR+TEST 2021.
The AMA Innovation Award has been bestowed directly on the most innovative minds for 21 years. The award is given to the developers themselves, not to the institutions behind them. The jury consists of industry experts from universities, research institutes and companies. The jurors pay special attention to the scientific achievement, the degree of innovation of the development and the expected chances in the market.

Berlin, November 6, 2020 - The AMA Association for Sensor and Measuring Technology (AMA) publishes the new AMA Industry Guide 2020/21, a 135-page brochure providing information about suppliers of sensors, measuring technology and services for various user industries. The AMA Industry Guide 2020/2021 can now be downloaded or used online free of charge. Due to the current situation, however, a print version has been omitted this year.
In its updated Industry Guide 2020/2021, the AMA Association for Sensor and Measuring Technology maps the approximately 1,000 product and service categories of its 450 members from industry and science. Interested parties can search both by measured variables and by keywords. A targeted search for AMA members is also possible. They are displayed in alphabetical order with contact details and product range. The compendium is published as a German-English edition.

Sensor and Measurement Science International 2021: Call for Papers online
New date for the international Conference on Sensors, Measurement, and Metrology
Berlin, 23 September 2020 - The AMA Association for Sensors and Measurement is opening its new Call for Papers to the international conference: Sensor and Measurement Science International (SMSI) 2021. The convention is to take place in the coming year as a hybrid conference parallel to the SENSOR+TEST 2021 trade fair from 3 to 6 May 2021 in Nuremberg. The new final submission date for lectures and poster presentations ends on 30 November 2020.
In 2021, the new conference will replace the previous AMA Conferences. The major topics, sensor technology and instrumentation will be complemented in the new format by measuring technology and metrology.
The SMSI 2021 links national and international representatives from research, science, and industry. The conference pillar sensors deals primarily with sensor principles, materials, technology, and applications, and integrates the satellite conference IRS² 2021, the conference pillar measuring technology with measuring principles as well as advanced methods, networked systems, and novel AI approaches to measuring. The area of metrology deals with traceability, advanced calibration, and testing methods as well as new regulations and standards in measuring technology.
The parallel SENSOR+TEST 2021 trade fair, as an information platform for sensor, measuring, and testing technology, expands the innovation dialog for the conference participants beyond the SMSI 2021.

AMA Association reports industry development in the second quarter of 2020
Sensor and Measuring Technology already recorded slight revenue losses in the first quarter, in the second quarter sales fell by a further eight percent. Incoming orders in the industry also developed negatively, falling by 13 percent. The share of AMA member companies that have registered short-time work rose to 55 percent in the second quarter.
Berlin, September 16, 2020 - The AMA Association for Sensors and Measurement (AMA) polls its approximately 450 members about the economic development in the second quarter. According to their own statements, the industry generated a drop in sales of eight percent in the second quarter compared to the previous quarter.
It is interesting to note that large and small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) show similar sales trends, but expectations differ. While SMEs had predicted a 14 percent drop in sales in the first quarter, they generated a less negative result than expected, at minus eight percent. For the current quarter, SMEs are expecting a minus of three percent. The large companies expected a decline of three percent and have to cope with a drop in sales of nine percent. For the third quarter, the large companies expect a minus of one percent.
Development of the most important sales markets in the second quarter
The sales markets of sensor and measurement technology companies also developed differently in the second quarter. The only positive developments were sales to the building and heating, ventilation and air-conditioning sectors. The medical technology sector reported a slight overall decline.
Suppliers to the strongly sensor-driven automotive, mobility, mechanical and electrical engineering sectors suffered the sharpest falls in sales. Expectations for the current quarter are also clouding significantly in these sectors. On the other hand, suppliers to the semiconductor and medical technology industries and to the company's own sensor and measurement technology sector are confident.
Summary statement
"The entire German economy experienced a significant decline in economic output in the first half of the year," says Thomas Simmons, AMA Managing Director. "Subsequently, this development also pulled sensor and measurement technology into a downward trend. Weak demand from abroad is additionally flanking this sales trend. It is not yet possible to estimate quantitatively how severe the slump will be for sensor and measurement technology manufacturers".

The second awarded innovation is the fluidFOX from MicroResonant, has already won the AMA Association’s Young Enterprises special award. It is a compact system for monitoring the quality of lubricants and hydraulic oils. Independent of the type of lubricant, the system not only determines the viscosity, but establishes a comprehensive profile including a number of parameters depending on temperature and pressure. The analyzer thus contributes to the reduction of maintenance costs and risks of machine outages. Innovations in Sensor and Measuring Technology as an Overall Winner
This year, 38 innovative research and development teams with first-rate developments contended for the AMA Innovation Award. Among these were 16 young enterprises that showed just how innovative and future-oriented sensor and measuring technology for tomorrow’s solutions can be.
“The two winning projects, FAMAS and fluidFOX, convinced the jury with outstanding scientific solutions, a high degree of innovation, and clear market relevance,” said jury chairman Professor Andreas Schütze from the Saarland University, commenting on this year’s selection.
“FAMAS – the FAst Magnetic Angle Sensor is a particularly elegant control solution for the problem inherent in high-speed Hall sensors applying a new approach. And the fluidFOX swayed us with its extremely good measuring quality in the field by its use of temperature and pressure dependencies of the measuring parameters,” explained Schütze this year’s jury decision.
The winning teams have been invited to present their projects at the SENSOR+TEST 2021 at the award ceremony for the AMA Innovation Award 2021.

Sensor industry outlook pessimistic for second quarter
Berlin, 22 June, 2020 - The AMA Association for Sensors and Measurement polls its members every quarter on their economic development. The sensor industry reports a drop in turnover of one percent for the first quarter of this year compared to the previous quarter. Orders incoming rose at the beginning of the year by four percent. The sensor industry expects a drop in revenue of four percent for the second quarter.
Turnover and orders incoming in the German industry partially recuperated at the beginning of the year. However, due to the Corona pandemic, which sparked a massive worldwide decline in supply and demand, the economic trend has reversed.
The effects of the pandemic impact production, supply chains, sales markets, and the German employment market. According to the AMA Association the extent of the slump for the sensor and measurement industry is at present difficult to estimate. In the current quarter, the sensor industry is counting with a drop in revenue of four percent.
“Since the national and international sales markets have steeply declined due to the Corona pandemic, this has a time-lagged impact on the producers of sensors and measuring technology,” says Thomas Simmons, general manager of the AMA Association for Sensors and Measurement. “The economic development for the first quarter shows that the suppliers for the automotive industry are especially affected, having to cope with an extensive drop in revenue. These and the suppliers for machine and plant engineering have a pessimistic outlook for the current quarter. Unlike this development, the AMA members supplying building automation and medical technology record slight increases in the first quarter and have a clearly optimistic outlook on the current quarter.”
No SENSOR+TEST 2020
The preparations for the SENSOR+TEST 2020 in Nuremberg were already in top gear. From the 23rd to the 25th of June, 2020, the call was supposed to be “Welcome to the innovation dialog!” Regrettably, like many other trade fairs, the SENSOR+TEST will not be held this year. This is because of the continued development and existing critical risk inherent in the Covid-19 pandemic (SARS-CoV-2). The circumstances have led to the prohibition of public events in Bavaria, where the SENSOR+TEST thus cannot take place.
This year experts will regrettably not be able to meet for their intensive exchange of ideas at the worldwide most important industrial fair for sensor and measuring technology in Nuremberg. Due to the injunction against major public events in Bavaria (Germany) until 31 August 2020, the SENSOR+TEST 2020 was now consequently prohibited as well. “Our team has fought tooth and nail to carry out the SENSOR+TEST 2020,” said organizer Holger Bödeker. “Nevertheless, the event can unfortunately not take place. event.” This was a difficult decision, but necessary for the protection of the populace and the health of the visitors and participants of the fair. The two conferences that were to be held parallel to the SENSOR+TEST, the SMSI 2020 - Sensor and Measurement Science International and ettc2020 European Test and Telemetry Conference, also cannot take place. Holger Bödeker added, “We’d like to give special thanks to the many exhibitors, who wanted to show at the SENSOR+TEST 2020 and hoped and fought along with us for the event. Despite the global economic turbulences and worries, there were in fact very few cancellations. This is a great vote of confidence that we appreciate very much. Thus, Hall 1 as well as some topical and community stands were already booked out. This goes to show that the event continues to have a high significance in the planning and calendars of the enterprises.”
Despite the economic and political challenges of the coming weeks and months, the organizers are well aware of their responsibility for the most important platform for the entire system competence in measuring, testing, and monitoring tasks in all industries, as well as for the maintenance of this communication channel among exhibitors, scientists, and visitors. AMA Association reports on sensor industry development in 2019 and outlook for 2020
Sensors and measurement recorded a downturn in revenue for 2019 of one percent. For the current fiscal year, the sensor industry is counting with a positive development of five percent in turnover growth. Investments have increased by five percent, the export quota dropped by four percent, and the number of employees increased by the expected three percent compared to the results of the previous year.
Berlin, 12 March 2020 - The AMA Association for Sensors and Measurement (AMA) polled its members in January of 2020 on the economic development in 2019. According to the reports, the industry had a drop in revenue of one percent. However, looking at the various supply branches, the developments in sensors and measurement are self-explanatory and partially contrary.
Development of the Major Sales Markets
According to their own reports, the main sales market of the AMA members is machinery and plant engineering. Sensor manufacturers, including both SMEs as well as big sensor enterprises, supplying this market recorded slight losses in 2019.
The second most important market for AMA members is its own branch in sensor and measuring technology, which rose for most of these members. SMEs recorded on average a slight growth, while the bigger enterprises showed greater growth. Of interest may be electronics: While the SMEs showed growth here, the big enterprises of this branch was retrograde.
Surprisingly, the automotive market showed a statistically positive development for sensor suppliers. SMEs gained slightly in this currently difficult market, while bigger enterprises rose significantly. However, the sales market for aerospace was overall retrograde for the supplying AMA members.
Sensor Industry Recorded Slight Export Losses
The traditionally strong export quota of this branch showed a loss of four percent down to 51 percentage points. Thus exports are still relatively strong as is the producing in Germany as a whole. Clearly discernible this year: The exports to other European countries remained stable at 28 percentage points, whereas exports to non-European countries successively dropped.
Skilled Personnel and Ensuring Continued Young Talent
The mostly medium-sized enterprises in the sensor industry continued to hire employees in 2019. The overall number of employees increased by three percent and is to further rise by two percent in the current year. The enterprises in sensor and measuring technology ascertained that it has become increasingly difficult to find qualified professionals. Asked whether they would hire young, motivated Southern Europeans with appropriate language skills, more than 80 percent of the respondents considered this as an opportunity to overcome the shortage of skilled labor.

“The economy is in a state of flux. The markets for automotives, machinery, and plant engineering, regarded guarantors for our growing economy, are now floundering. This sets the major sensor and measurement sales markets in motion as well. On the other hand, new markets are gaining in significance,” says Thomas Simmons, managing director of the AMA Association. “This explains the slight overall decline, but also the positive outlook of our member enterprises. They are counting on a revenue growth of five percent for the current year.”

Berlin, 25 February 2020 - The AMA Association represents its member from industry and science from 20–24 April 2020 at the Hannover Messe (Hanover Trade Fair). At the AMA Center for Sensors and Measurement in Hall 11, Stand F 35, 14 AMA members will present new approaches to products and solutions. The AMA Center invites visitors to come and talk about topics relating to sensor and measuring technology.
Besides the exhibiting experts, the AMA Center offers an up-to-date edition of the AMA Sensor Directory. This association compendium provides an overview of the diverse sensor and measuring technology suppliers. In this brochure, interested visitors will find about 1,000 product and service categories from the 450 AMA industry, science, and research members.
